The crews of Soyuz TMA-06M left Star City for Baikonur yesterday. Their families saw them off. They even had a cheering section when they landed in Kazakhstan. They launch on October 23. (I covet Yevgeny Tarelkin’s wife’s coats. She had a red one at Red Square and now a houndstooth one.)
Since today Sunita Williams is commander of the ISS. She is the first female commander since Peggy Whitson left the Space station in 2008. These 2 are probably the most experienced female astronauts; they are the only 2 female commanders of the ISS, they have exchanged spacewalk records and also both of them have used improvised tools to either clean or check the space station.
Also Gennady Padalka’s hair is amazing. For all of his ISS missions(not sure about his Mir mission), he never cuts his hair.
I’ve been so busy lately, I completely forgot about the Russian spacewalk today. Gennady Padalka and Yuri Malenchenko are outside today moving the Strela crane from the Russian Pirs module to the Zarya module, launching a satellite and installing meteoroid debris shields. They’re in the process of launching the satellite. You can watch here.
