A belated birthday to Anatoli Artsebarsky, who turned 56 yesterday (Sept 9). His only mission was the 9th expedition aboard Mir in 1991 along with Sergei Krikalev. When the Soviet Union collapsed Krikalev’s engineer replacement on the next Soyuz was instead replaced by Kazakh Toktar Aubakirov, as a goodwill gesture (the newly independent Kazakhstan is where the Russian space program launches and lands). Krikalev stayed aboard for the next mission and Artsebarsky went back to Earth. After Artsebarsky landed he always kept tabs on Krikalev, even taking a ham radio along on his post flight rest at a resort. And he was there to finally meet Krikalev when he landed.
