It was Sigmund Jähn’s 75th birthday yesterday. He became the first German in space in 1978, aboard Soyuz 31 with commander Valery Bykovsky. He represented East Germany at the time. The flight was part of the Interkosmos program, designed to include countries allied with the Soviet Union through the Warsaw Pact.
